What To Expect When Hiring A Professional Ghostwriter
Expect working with a professional ghostwriter to write a 30k-50k word book for your business to be a significant investment.
This is the current popular length for a non-fiction book for business. I also write list building ebooks for my clients which require a lower investment.
Both formats are great for attracting your ideal clients.
A high quality book takes considerable time, skill and effort.
These are the very reasons you may be considering or ready to hire a professional ghostwriter. ‘Ghostwriting’ or ‘Ghostwriter’ is just a fancy name for outsourcing the writing of your book to a professional.
I’ve noticed that sometimes potential authors worry it’s cheating to hire a ghostwriter to help them with their book but that’s because there’s a misunderstanding about what it entails.
After all, if as a business person you hired a professional web developer to create your website, would it not be yours just because someone else put it together for you?
Hiring a Ghostwriter is the same thing. I write people’s books for them but the content of the book is their own. It’s their book, not mine. I’m simply the conduit for their words. Writing is a skill like any other and because you’re in business and know your topic, it doesn’t mean you are a professional writer.
As with book writing coaches, there is a whole range of pricing and quality. You get what you pay for so don’t expect to have a high quality book written on a shoestring budget.
For most ‘expert’ businesses the investment is a no brainer because it can easily be recouped with a couple of private clients, a coaching or consulting contract or a speaking engagement. The book continues to work for them and is profit thereafter.
If this isn’t the case, it’s a good idea to review your pricing and business model. A book increases your expert authority so you are better positioned for premium pricing.
You don’t have to be a published author to charge premium prices but it helps.
There are many freelancers who offer generic writing services online who don’t have considerable book writing experience so be cautious of low cost services.
Producing a professional book isn’t simply a case of adding a lot of words to the page.
Although ‘finding time’ to write a book is seen as the big problem for business owners who already have a full schedule, skill is also required to organise and simplify a message so that your ideal readers are compelled to keep reading your book.
In an age where we’re distracted by gadgets and social media, it’s a challenge to keep your readers’ attention on your book.
Your credibility and reputation are at stake when you put your name on a book cover. It’s critical your book be of the highest quality which is why when outsourcing the writing, investing with a professional ghostwriter is the only smart option.
If the hours of your day are already gobbled up with your business and personal life, hiring a professional ghostwriter could be a perfect solution.
You get on with producing revenue and doing what you do best, secure in the knowledge your book is being written by a pro behind the scenes.
Different ghostwriters have different processes but this is how I work so it will give you a good indication of what’s required and what to expect.
How Your Book Gets Written & Other Important Information
When I work with my clients we kick off with a Become A Published Author VIP Intensive.
In our time together we create:
- Clarity on which book is right for their business or organisation
- The unique angle to position their book in the marketplace so it stands out
- The book outline, structure, target market and big message of their book so I can begin writing it to the agreed schedule
- Complete content plan
- A bespoke ghostwriting schedule to ensure we both get what we need to deliver the highest quality book, with the minimum time investment from the client
Then we have a series of focused calls where I interview the client so I have the material I need to write their book with their content and voice. If they have clear written or recorded material I can refer to that.
These calls are recorded so I then extract the relevant content and write a succinct, professional manuscript. The number of calls required depends on the book length and are included as part of the Done-For-You Ghostwriting Service so there are no hidden costs to worry about.
Clients are updated chapter by chapter and we agree milestones, revisions and completion date upfront so they know exactly what to expect.
We sign an agreement so the author can rest assured everything they share will be confidential and they retain full rights of the finished manuscript.
The manuscript will receive one final edit and therefore you won’t incur additional editing costs. A bespoke publishing plan is also included if required.
